Last week, Donald Trump vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a bill sent to him by Congress that pays for the Department of Defense spending for all of next year. Trump vetoed the NDAA, having issues with the bill, but both houses of Congress decided to override his veto. (In order to override any presidential veto, BOTH the House and the Senate need two-thirds of their members to vote for an override.) The House passed the NDAA override yesterday, and whether the NDAA bill becomes law or not is now up to the Senate passing their override of the same bill.
Senator Mitch McConnell-R, KY, leads the Republicans in the U.S. Senate, and needs 67 Senators to override the presidential veto, and pass the NDAA bill. Currently there are only 52 Republicans in the Senate, so McConnell needs at least 15 DEMOCRATIC Senators to vote with the Republicans to override the presidential veto. Hmmm.
At the same time, millions of Americans are struggling, beaten down by COVID19; many have lost their jobs, or have had their hours cuts. Many are facing eviction or foreclosure, and the cash crunch on Americans is palpable. To alleviate some of the hardship, Congress passed-also last week-a $908 billion COVID relief bill, giving many cash-strapped Americans $600. Donald Trump announced he would not sign the COVID relief bill unless Congress increased the amount from $600 to $2000 for American citizens suffering financial hardship from COVID: it is the least Trump could do, being that it was his inept bungling of the COVID crisis that led to the American economy being in shambles. (By the way, Democrats like Senator Bernie Sanders, D-VT, have been demanding $2,000 for Americans for 8 months). After more unnecessary delays by Trump, he finally signed the COVID relief bill Sunday evening-making it law. Not to be outdone, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a ‘clean’ bill to the House floor the next day that would give Trump his heart’s desire: Pelosi’s bill increases COVID relief from $600 to $2000. The House passed that bill quickly, and sent it-along with the House override of the NDAA bill-to the Senate. Mmm, mmm, mmm.
So here we are: two critical bills sitting on the desk of Senator Mitch McConnell. One increases the amount of aid struggling American citizens get right now in the middle of the COVID crisis: the other pays for our national defense for the next year. McConnell desperately wants to override the Trump veto on the defense bill (NDAA), but does not even want to vote on the COVID bill that would increase the amount of money for every day citizens.
It seems the DEMOCRATS are in the driver’s seat here: either the COVID bill gets passed by the Senate AND signed into law by Trump, or DEMOCRATIC Senators can vote “NO” to override the NDAA veto. It is time that the Congress, the Senate, and Mitch McConnell finally learn who runs this country.
It is the American taxpayer!
Every American citizen needs to hear this, and every American citizen who currently has even one DEMOCRATIC Senator needs to write/call/email that Senator and demand they NOT vote for the NDAA veto override until the money for COVID relief is in their pockets. Americans are sick and tired of being taxed for defense, and for everything else, only to be passed over for real assistance when they need it.
The Republicans in the Senate can easily vote to increase COVID relief from $600 to $2000; all they have to do is demand the bill be brought forward by Senator McConnell. All they need to understand is that without voting for the COVID relief increase, they can kiss their NDAA veto override goodbye. Americans are done watching Moscow Mitch and the GOP give our money to everyone but us.
Certainly, the U.S. Senate is interested in increasing aid to struggling American citizens at a time of severe crisis. Even the two stock-swindlers-turned-Senators from Georgia, Loeffler and Perdue-otherwise known as Greed and Corruption-have announced their support of the increase to $2000. This comes as quite a surprise, seeing that both vehemently and repeatedly opposed supporting even $1,200 prior to having to face election runoffs.
Mitch McConnell may determine what bill gets to the Senate floor, but DEMOCRATS control whether the NDAA veto can be overridden in the Senate. The Senate needs 2/3 of all Senators to override Trump’s veto of the NDAA, so McConnell is powerless without the support of Democratic Senators.
DEMOCRATS in the U.S. Senate must NOT vote for the NDAA bill veto override UNTIL AFTER the Senate FIRST approves increasing COVID relief from $600 to $2000. The $2000 COVID relief bill MUST be passed-and signed by Trump-before any DEMOCRATIC Senator votes for the NDAA.
There are times when we must play HARD BALL, and THIS IS THAT TIME.
Remember, No money for Americans, no Money for Defense.
